Jan Smuts becoming high accident zone (WATCH)

PARKVIEW - Three accidents have occurred on Jan Smuts just this past week.

Around 15 people were injured on the morning of 21 August when two taxis collided at the Jan Smuts and Eton Road intersection near the Johannesburg Zoo.

“ER24 paramedics, along with other services responded and on arrival on the scene, found the two taxis in the middle of the road. Both taxis had sustained a large amount of damage in the collision,” explained Russel Meiring ER24 Spokesperson.

On assessment, paramedics found that about 15 patients had been injured in the collision. Two of the patients were found to be in a critical condition.

Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life equipment to free one of the drivers who was trapped in his vehicle in a 30-minute operation. Once freed, paramedics immediately began their treatment and provided the two critically injured patients with advanced life support.

Remaining patients on the scene were found to have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate. They were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported to nearby facilities for further observations.

Another accident occurred a few hours later just down the road from the taxi collision on Jan Smuts Avenue. Two vehicles collided with each other, a BMW and a Porche.

Joburg Roads Agency workers were fixing the traffic light when the two cars collided and knocked the traffic light down.

According to an eyewitness who wishes to remain anonymous, one of the vehicles had the right of way as the traffic lights were not working, but the other vehicle did not wait.

Traffic officials were on scene and there were no reported injuries.

Earlier this week another major accident occurred just opposite the Johannesburg Zoo.

According to Danielle Dooley, spokesperson for Emer-G-Med, 11 patients from the school bus were treated as well as five occupants of the bakkie.

According to Dooley, both vehicles were traveling north. “The school bus was in the right lane and the bakkie in the left lane. The bus turned in front of the bakkie and was T-boned,” she said.
