Firecrackers used as weapons against Security guard

HILLBROW - On New Year's Eve, CAM Security, which is based in Hillbrow, were called out to an incident. Upon arrival, they found one of their security guards had been injured.

The guard reported that after a firecracker went off he felt a sharp pain in his leg. CAM Security found that the guard had two nails in his upper left leg and one nail in his ankle.

George Moraitis from the security company said, “Upon further investigation, we [discovered] that people are now using firecrackers… [with] nails bound onto the crackers.”

Moraitis said these ‘new’ firecrackers are sold for R50 and criminals are now using them as weapons against security guards and police officers. Moraitis said, “We have notified Hillbrow police and will be making a report to crime intelligence on this matter.”

Moraitis urged all members of the community, security companies, as well as the police, to remain vigilant and keep all doors and car windows closed when possible.
