Parkview Police Station’s communications officer, Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha, has expressed concern after the recent Community Safety Forum meeting held in Parkview, where there have been cases of mugging in and around Zoo Lake this past week.
According to Ramovha, the incidents are allegedly taking place in the early hours of the morning between 5am and 7am. “What is of great concern to us is that none of the cases were reported to Parkview police and this is worrying as it will prevent us from planning against crime effectively,” said Ramovha.
“We urge community members to help us in this regard by reporting [crime], even if they feel it’s just a minor incident. This enables us to gather patterns and intelligence in order to make the necessary arrests.”
He added that it is only through a community and police partnership that crime can be addressed meaningfully.
Ramovha shared some tips on keeping safe. He asked community members to be conscious of crime and aware of crime opportunities at all times. He stressed the importance of never walking around alone at Zoo Lake and not talking to strangers, but to rather walk in well-lit areas of the park and in a group, if possible.
“Always trust your instincts and avoid going onto a congested street where you cannot even walk properly, as that is where you will find criminals pickpocketing, and please remember to avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them,” urged Ramovha.
