Attempted hijacking victim thanks police

PARKVIEW – Family of an elderly woman who recently fell victim to an attempted hijacking have come forward wanting to thank Parkview police for their swift and brave efforts because they arrived ‘less than a minute’ after the ordeal.

Peggy Chapman, twin sister to victim Pat Mark, has commended officers from the station because she can’t imagine what would have happened to her sister had the officers not reacted so quickly.

“We hear so much about what is wrong with the police force,” stated Chapman. “But, I would like to tell a good story about how magnificent Parkview police were.”

Chapman told of how her sister was leaving a friend’s house recently when two armed men wearing gloves entered the property.

“They grabbed a gold bracelet from the homeowner and were in my sister’s car in a flash, each holding a revolver to the sides of her head,” said Chapman of her sister’s traumatising ordeal.

She continued to tell how they screamed at her for money and tried to grab her handbag. It is suspected that a third suspect was possibly keeping a lookout, because the suspects in the car became spooked and ‘suddenly fled, taking only the car keys’.

Chapman said two Parkview police vans were there within moments.

“The gentle kindness and understanding of their [the two elderly women’s] condition were quite superb,” said Chapman. She said that police were still on scene consoling both women by the time she and her husband arrived to collect her sister.

“I cannot commend them enough,” concluded Chapman. “In this unhappy country in which we live, I now have hope.”

Spokesperson for Parkview police, Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha, expressed his appreciation for the commendation, stating their jobs are arguably thankless more often than not.

“We do what is expected of us without expecting anything in return. We took an oath to serve and protect the citizens of the Republic and we shall at all material times abide by it,” said Ramovha.

“It is particularly gratifying when the most vulnerable members of our communities [women, children and the elderly] are recipients of good service. The finger on the pulse management approach by our station commander, Colonel Thembi Kubone, is also worth mentioning. Members seem to have an extra spring in their step these days, this is attributable to us warming up to the back to basics approach by national office.”
