Cognac King is in Joburg

JOBURG - The 'King of Cognac' visited South Africa and gave City Buzz the low-down on himself and the world of cognac.

Vincent Chappe is the president of the House of Bisquit Cognac.

He was born in Jarnac, France, a small neighbouring village of the illustrious town of Cognac, where he was exposed to the art of vine growing and distillation at an early age. Since his appointment as president of the company, the French gentleman has visited South Africa a few times in an attempt to tap the growing brandy market.

The brand made its debut at the annual AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction this year with their most valued bottle, L’Origine, being appraised for more than R300 000.

Chappe said the vision of the company was to offer their customers an experience rather than a product, and it is for that reason that the highest bidder at the auction will soon make their way to the Bisquit distillery to pour their own mature cognac in their very own crystal L’Origine decanter.

When asked about the city we love, Johannesburg, Chappe couldn’t hold back his delight at being back and able to smell the fresh air.

“I have to tell you that I really love this country,” he said.

“It is only my fourth time in Joburg and every time I come here, everything has changed. It’s the only place in the world where I see things changing so fast. If I’m not mistaken, it is the heart of your country, and it is booming and even the people are changing.”

Chappe was also excited about the upcoming 200-year anniversary of the brand in 2019 and made sure to let City Buzz know that South Africans should keep that year in mind – it’s sure to be a great one.
