Suspect nabbed for possession of unlicenced firearms and ammunition

JOBURG - Members of the Directorate Priority Crime Investigation received information about a male who was in possession of unlicensed firearms at the corner of Kenmere and St Georges Streets, in Yeoville on 26 February at 02.30.

Following a tip-off, members of the Directorate Priority Crime Investigation arrested a man in possession of unlicenced firearms on 26 February at 2.30pm.

According to the spokesperson for Yeoville Police Station Thabo Malatji, police arrived at the suspect’s flat on the corner of Kenmere and St Georges streets in Yeoville. The man opened the front door and allowed the police officers to enter. “When they searched [the premises], they found six hunting rifles, three pistols, one revolver and various ammunition,” Malatji said.

“When the police asked about the ownership of the firearms, the suspect gave them firearm licences which did not correspond with some of the firearms in question. They also seized a rifle silencer and an undisclosed amount of money.”

The suspect was taken to the Yeoville Police Station and is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
