Pupil robbed at gunpoint

KEW - After an act of bravery and the assistance of community members, a school pupil managed to overcome a robbery, assist police in arresting the suspects, and recover the goods which were stolen from him.

Sandile Khumalo (16) was walking home from school on the corner of 1st Street and 1st Avenue in Kew at about 1.30pm when two suspects approached him and asked him for R2. After he told them he did not have R2, they grabbed him from behind, pointed a firearm at him and demanded his personal belongings.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela of Bramley Police Station said, “Suddenly the victim felt one of the suspects grab him from behind and the other demanded his cellphone and watch. One suspect pulled out a pistol and cocked it, threatening to shoot him if he did not hand over his cellphone and watch.”

After complying with the suspects’ orders, Khumalo handed over his cellphone and watch. The suspects then fled the scene. According to Maphakela, the victim approached a bystander to assist him in running after the suspects. After approaching the suspects, the bystander confronted them, who then pointed the gun at him and ran off.

Khumalo, however, continued to follow the suspects and asked another bystander to assist him. “The victim, together with another bystander, followed the suspects along 2nd Avenue when 7 Arrows Security personnel managed to assist and apprehend one of the suspects,” Maphakela said.

The victim was able to recover all his valuables. “One suspect was taken to Bramley Police Station for further detention and the other suspect was later apprehended by a Metro police officer with the help of the victim.”

The suspects will appear in court soon.
