African art in Maboneng
JOBURG - The City is all about arts and culture, and City Buzz is letting you in on some arty hotspots.
Art Afrique is an international art consulting group with one gallery at Arts on Main in the trendy Maboneng Precinct and its head office in the richest square mile in Africa, Sandton.
While the head office serves mainly as a consultation facility to help art lovers decide which pieces would be best in their homes and offices, the gallery in Maboneng serves primarily to showcase the artworks of local and international artists.
A man who goes by the name of Kachinga runs the store and invites anyone in to check out their range of ceramics, African craft art, painting, sketches, sculpture and jewellery.
Kachinga explained that Art Afrique has on display the works of Senzo Shabangu, a small-town artist who made his way to Johannesburg and completed a three-year course in printmaking at Artist Proof Studios; Faith Baloyi, who creates jewellery inspired by Africa and the La Négritude movement; Ardmore Ceramics, created by various artists who work only in sculpting; plus many more talented individuals from across the country.
While nothing at the gallery can be described as cheaply made, the store still caters to suit every person’s pocket.
“The items range from about R125 to our most expensive piece, which is about R22 000,” explained the store clerk.
Art lovers can find hand-crafted pillows, wall-hanging art pieces, sculptures, metal works, jewellery and a number of other items within the stores price range and suitable for their own needs.
Artwork of all shapes and sizes are on display and for sale at the art gallery in Maboneng – and with a range of proudly African pieces, there’s no reason not to get on down and check it out – there’s sure to be something there just for you.
