Voices of Joburg: Sounds in the city
JOBURG - City Buzz explored the student town that is Auckland Park and ran into a student with a story.
We ran into Ebenezer Maxwell in the student village and thought that he, with his headphones, would have a story to tell.
“I’m originally from Zim,” he said.
“I came here to study sound at the Academy of Sound Engineering.”
City Buzz, wasting no time, just had to ask the gentleman what his thoughts of the big city are. “I think it’s a very big city. I think they could have divided the area and made it smaller. You can just travel for kilometres and you’re still in the same area. It’s a good city, though, some of it good and some of it bad,” Maxwell said.
Hearing his take on Johannesburg, City Buzz inquired about the class he had just taken. “I had sound capturing this morning. They teach us mic techniques for live shows and stuff like that, and from here I can become a live sound engineer for live shows and events.”
Interested in the studies of the young man, we asked him which show had been his favourite one in the city, and we were given an answer that we didn’t expect. “The most interesting show I’ve experienced in the city was a show I attended in Newtown. It was one of the most amazing nights I’ve ever had in the city – Witchfest,” he said.
“You listen to rock music,” City Buzz asked.
“Yes, I do. I think my favourites at the moment are The Script and Coldplay, yeah those are my favourite bands.”
The young aspiring sound technician from Zimbabwe has come to the right place to hone his passion of stage sound engineering, and with so many opportunities in the big city, he should be well on his way.
