Former Wits employee in cour for alleged theft of millions

BRAAMFONTEIN – Read how a former Wits employee was arrested for fraud, costing the institution millions of rand.

A former University of the Witwatersrand employee has recently made a brief appearance in court for allegedly defrauding the university of millions of rands.

This is according to a report by Times Live which stated that the employee, John Dikobe, was arrested for submitting fraudulent invoices for services that were never rendered.

Dikobe was allegedly employed as a bookkeeper at the Wartenweiler Library, located on the university’s main campus in Braamfontein, and had, over a period of four years, fraudulently submitted invoices and been paid for services his company had never rendered.

He was arrested last year in December after inconsistencies were discovered with the submitted invoices and subsequently reported to the police.

Dikobe was then charged and has since appeared in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 6 April, where he faces 30 counts of fraud equating to more than R 3.4 million.

Wits University spokesperson, Shirona Patel, confirmed that Dikobe was fired after the financial system implicated him, but said that the university could not comment on these claims as the matter was before the courts.

Dikobe has pleaded not guilty and is currently out on bail while the case has been postponed to 4 May to allow the State to gather more information.
