Controversial Pastor Paseka ‘Mboro’ Motsoeneng could face a criminal charge after failing to comply with the commission investigating the financial affairs of certain churches.
This after the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities laid a charge of contempt of court against Motsoeneng. The case was opened at Hillbrow Police Station on 12 April after Motsoeneng allegedly failed to comply with the commission’s request to answer questions regarding his church.
Motsoeneng is the well-known leader of the Incredible Happenings Ministries based in Katlehong and was called to appear before the commission, along with other pastors, following an investigation into the commercialisation of churches.
Mpiyakhe Mkholo, on behalf of the commission, explained that the controversial pastor had been called to appear before the commission several times. “We called him in, along with other pastors, and he only appeared twice but on both occasions, refused to answer certain questions posed to him and denied having a church, despite being referred to as a ‘prophet’,” Mkholo said.
“He alleged that he ran a close corporation but when we asked him where the money generated from Sunday services collections at his church went to, he was unable to provide an answer.”
Mkholo explained that Motsoeneng was also asked to submit compliance certificates for his company, but failed to do so and it was for this reason that the commission decided to open a case against him.
Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo, spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station, confirmed that a case had been opened against the pastor.
“He has been charged with being in contempt of court but at this stage, no arrest has been made as we are still investigating the matter,” Zondo said.
The case continues.
