Slow mail for Parkview residents
PARKVIEW – Understaffed post office says it has service delivery under control.
A Parkview resident is not satisfied with the service provided by the Parkview Post Office and wants answers.
Shaun Maynard, a resident in the area, said he did not receive mail for a month and when he approached the post office, he was told to speak to the depot manager, who was allegedly nowhere to be found.
“I went to the back and I found the gates locked, and returned the next day,” said Maynard.
“The gates were open, but there was no one in the large sorting room. [The room] looked like a bombsite.”
The disgruntled resident said he found a man cleaning a car and asked for assistance. The resident claimed the man went to his mailbox and retrieved three letters from April.
“He [the man] said there was no postal delivery service because the post office had not issued uniforms or shoes to the postmen,” said Maynard.
Depot supervisor, John Mabitsi, refuted Maynard’s claims and said the post office was delivering letters, but the service was slow due to an inadequate number of workers. “We are delivering, but are interchanging suburbs,” he said.
“The depot is fully functional and the letters will be delivered.”
Andrew Nongogo, head of operations at the South African Post Office (Sapo) said the Parkview mail-sorting depot currently has six vacancies and Sapo has started the process to train and transfer employees from other post office facilities to Parkview Post Office.
“That will restore the service to normality. This process is expected to take roughly six weeks,” said Nongongo.
“Until then, mail to postmen’s walks with low volumes is delivered twice a week and mail to those with higher volumes is delivered three times a week,” he added.
