Rise of vehicle thefts a concern

NORWOOD – CIMAC warns against increased vehicle thefts and offers safety tips.

The continued increase in theft and theft out of motor vehicles within the Norwood precinct remains a concern to Norwood Police Station.

This according to the station’s Crime Information Management and Analysis Centre’s Riaan Riekert, who urges motorists to be cautious when leaving their vehicles parked in a public area.

Here are some of Riekert’s safety tips:

  • Motorists with a remote lock must stand next to the car and physically check that the doors are locked, and this includes the boot, thus preventing theft out of the car as well as thieves gaining access to the car using the boot.
  • Make eye contact with the car guards looking after your car and talk to them and ask their names. Motorists must get a physical description of the guard and look out for distinguishing features to help identify them in case there is a theft.
  • Ensure your vehicle is parked in a well-lit area, avoiding dark areas, streets or parking lots.
  • Opt to park your car in a parking area with a security boom and one that has controlled access, rather than on the street.
