Police on the hunt for taxi driver rapist

KEW – Police search for suspect following rape ordeal in a taxi

The Bramley police need help catching a taxi driver accused of a recent rape within the precinct.

The shocking incident allegedly took place on 22 August after the victim, who was headed for Kew, got into the taxi coming from the Johannesburg Central Business District.

According to Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for Bramley Police Station, as the journey progressed and all the other passengers got off the taxi, the victim asked the driver when the taxi was expected to get to Kew. “The driver then allegedly told her that he would not be able to drop her off at her destination as he was off-duty but promised to drop her off nearby,” he said.

“He then began demanding his taxi fare money and when she told him that she did not have the required amount, he demanded a kiss from her, which she refused.”

The suspect then drove on for some time before stopping and parking the taxi on the sidewalk, where he then allegedly forcibly kissed the victim before forcing her down, undressing her and then raping her.

Maphakela explained that following the ordeal, the woman managed to push the suspect away and get out of the taxi, where she ran for help. “At that point, the driver removed his rear number plate and drove off, making off with her handbag and valuables.”

Maphakela confirmed that the incident was reported to the Bramley Police Station where a case of rape was opened.

Police are still looking for the suspect, whom the victim is able to identify. The investigation continues.
