Forty-year-old tree gets new home at War Memorial at the SA National Museum of Military History
SAXONWOLD – A 40-year-old tree will be moved from the corner of 14th Avenue and Oxford Road to the War Memorial in order to preserve it.
A massive 40-year-old palm tree has been transplanted from the corner of 14th Avenue and Oxford Road to the South African National Museum of Military History.
The tree was located at the site of a new development by Barrow Properties. One of the tenants, Sappi, is currently working on an indigenous garden at the development and the palm tree is not indigenous to South Africa.
Rather than have the tree destroyed Barrow Properties and Sappi worked with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation to find a suitable alternative location for the tree.
Daniella Hess, the PR accounts executive for Barrow Properties said, “Barrow really promotes green, urban spaces and they really try to preserve as much of our natural environment as possible.”
A palm tree located at the war memorial had died and so it was decided that it would be the perfect location to transplant another palm tree.

The tree was dug up with a crane for over two hours and moving the tree and placing it in the new location took another two and a half hours.
