Jeppe High School for Girls in Kensington will host a Fiesta Fundraising Concert in support of the Ruth First Jeppe Memorial Scholarship.
“The scholarship programme has been running for six years and was set up in memory of Ruth First who attended Jeppe Girls,” said Carole Heming, public relations officer at the school.
The programme is funded solely by private and corporate donations.
“The scholarship has covered the full tuition for 61 schoolchildren who might not have been able to afford the fees to attend Jeppe High School for Girls.”
A total of 10 scholarship recipients have already matriculated and a further nine will matriculate this year.
“We are having our first major public fundraiser for this scholarship programme on 31 August at the Linder Auditorium and need as much support as possible to make it a success.”
The auditorium seats 1 059 people and Heming said they aim to fill it.
The concert will include something for everyone and will showcase the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra conducted by Richard Cock, light classical pieces and contemporary items.
“The Jeppe Choir, the Jeppe Pipe Band and accomplished musicians on the Jeppe staff will also perform.”
Bookings are at Computicket and ticket prices range from R190 to R250.
