The Torah Academy hosted grades 1 and 2 children from seven schools on 23 August for the first annual fun sports day.
The event was held corresponding with the Jewish holy month, Elul, which will usher in the Jewish New Year or Rosh Hashanah. The participating schools were Torah Academy, Maryvale College, King David Victory Park, Sandton Sinai, Yeshiva College, Hirsch Lyons and Houghton primary schools playing mini-netball and mini-soccer.
The Torah Academy Primary School principal, Rabbi Motti Hadar said this was the first of what would become an annual sports day and no scores would be kept as ‘it is not competitive, only fun’.
Each child was given a Chabad Acts of Random Kindness (Ark) bag to keep monies they collect for charity as these are the weeks preceding the Jewish High Holy Days, when it is customary to give to charity, together with prayer and penitence and to hear the shofar (ram’s horn) daily leading up to the festivals, which begin on the evening of September 20.
Rabbi Hadar appealed to the children to collect charity and put it in the Ark for anyone in need.
