Early Christmas celebration at Johannesburg Girls’ Preparatory School

Berea – The idea of the Christmas nativity is to spread peace, goodwill and joy throughout the Christmas season.

The Johannesburg Girls’ Preparatory School in Berea celebrated their well-loved Christmas nativity event on 30 November to kick-start the festive season holidays.

This celebration has been a tradition at the girls’ only school since the 1970’s, said Rene Budd, a teacher at the school.

A variety of activities took place on the day including Christmas carols and a nativity play which the children enjoyed very much. The play was directed by Budd and her colleague Justine Moodley and the school’s Grade 4’s impressed the audience with their performance.

The junior choir sang many beautiful carols, accompanied by teachers Johan van Staden and Pieter Kruger. They were also accompanied by Ayanda Tshona as they sang some wonderful traditional carols.

“A wonderful evening was enjoyed by all,” said Budd. “The children thoroughly enjoy [it] and took part in this with enthusiasm. The meaning of this occasion is the coming together of families and loved ones.”

Budd added that the significance of holding the nativity play on this evening was to celebrate the end of their year.

“The message was to spread love, tolerance and kindness to all… Non-perishables were donated to the less privileged,” she said.
