Megan van der Riet, St Mary’s School best achiever, has attributed her matric achievements in the 2017 Independent Examinations Board (IEB) on hard work.
Megan achieved distinctions in advanced programme mathematics, accounting, Afrikaans, English, French, geography, life orientation, mathematics and physical sciences.
Megan from the school in Waverley said she is looking forward to studying toward actuarial science at the Stellenbosch University in Cape Town this year. “I’m over the moon,” said Megan from her home in Houghton.
“I have worked quite hard and I thank my family and friends for their support and encouragements. I also thank my teachers for influencing me to study hard and the extra lessons they gave us.”
Megan encouraged the new matrics to work hard as well and to just do their best. “I know matric seems like it’s not going to end but ultimately it does. Matric is not so different to Grade 11 you just need to work.”
Another top achiever at the school is Reitumetse Mokgele from Sunninghill, who achieved distinctions in advanced programme mathematics, English, French, geography, history, IsiZulu, life orientation, mathematics and physical sciences.
St Mary’s matriculates garnered a total of 407 distinctions in the 2017 exams, underlining the school’s proud tradition of 130 years of academic excellence in educating girls – they achieved a 100 per cent pass rate.
According to their statement issued on 2 January, each of the 101 girls who wrote the exams passed, with 22 of the girls obtaining seven or more distinctions and more than half of them achieving marks of 75 per cent or more.
St Mary’s class of 2017 achieved 34 placements in the top 1 per cent of a subject, said St Mary’s head of school Deanne King, adding that the top two girls attained nine distinctions each. “Once again, St Mary’s girls have proven themselves with their dedication, discipline and hard work,” said King.
“Their matric results are a testament to the commitment they have shown throughout their school years to their education… they couldn’t have achieved as they have without the ongoing support and unwavering commitment of their parents and their teachers. I thus pay tribute to the girls, their parents and their teachers for our outstanding results.”
