The matric boys at St John’s College performed exceptionally well in their exams with the results.
The school achieved an incredible 100 per cent pass rate and a 98 per cent bachelor’s degree pass rate, with a total of 325 subject distinctions. Five matriculants achieved an average of 90 percent while 31 percent had averages of over 80 percent.
Executive headmaster Paul Edey said, “We are delighted with the results achieved by the class of 2017. The vast majority of these young men were involved beyond the classroom with their love of the arts, sport and involvement in community programmes.
“We salute the class of 2017 and their teachers, we thank them for their contribution to the school and know that these young men will go forward into the next exciting phase of their lives equipped to face the challenges posed by an increasingly unpredictable and complex world.”
The proud matriculants, the staff and parents gathered for the special results handover at the school on the morning 3 January with the majority filled with elation.
Six of the matrics earned nine distinctions. These top performing students were Nicholas Brinkmann, James Channon, Ernst Hechter, William Kerr-Phillips, Jordan Williamson and Matthew Whyte. Three of these boys were placed on the Independent Examination Boards top 1 per cent per subject candidates.
Nicholas Brinkmann was in the top 1 per cent for Latin, maths, advanced programme English, history, advanced programme maths, English home language and physical sciences.
Ernst Hechter placed in the top one percent in Afrikaans first additional language, maths and physical science.
Matthew Whyte placed in the top 1 per cent for information technology, maths and physical science.
Nicholas Brinkmann, Nicholas Jeffery and Christopher Tindle placed in the top 5 per cent in six or more subject with 80 per cent in life orientation.
Ernst Hechter, Numan Koor, Daniel Trengrove, Matthew Whyte and Jordan Williamson placed in the top 5 per cent in five subjects while scoring 80 per cent in life orientation.
Eight youngsters achieved eight distinctions including Carl Belger, Robert Bromley, Jack Gnodde, Nicholas Jeffery, Numan Koor, Merlin Love, Christopher Tindle and Daniel Trengrove.
Three others achieved seven distinctions. These were Mohamed Abdul Gani, Peter Boshoff and Rheede Erasmus.
