The new youngsters of St John’s College Academy were treated to a wonderful orientation camp at Maretlwane Wilderness School in Magaliesburg at the end of January to welcome them ahead of the academic year.
The camp was an opportunity for the youngsters to get to know each other while immersing themselves within nature. Spokesperson for the school, Jacqui Deeks said, “They had a wonderful time swimming in the river, hiking up Castle Gorge, sleeping under the stars and learning about snakes.”

The academy is an after-school enrichment programme for boys in Grade 10, 11 and 12 from disadvantaged backgrounds who attend government school in the surrounding community.
Deeks said the talented youngsters are identified by their schools in Grade 9 and are then invited to start attending the academy from the beginning of Grade 10. They are given the opportunity to finish the programme until matric.
There are currently 72 boys enrolled in the academy; 24 per grade.
