Parkview police welcome new liquor and second-hand goods officer to community

PARKVIEW – Parkview police have a new man heading the liquor and second-hand goods portfolio at the station. He now oversees a combined 110 liquor and second-hand goods shops.

Sergeant Thabo Chukudu of the Parkview Police Station has been appointed the new liquor and second-hand goods officer. Chukudu took over in early February and has since been charged with making daily rounds to liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers and recyclers to ensure compliance in the areas that they operate in.

Chukudu has been part of the police force since 2002, after completing police training in Pretoria. He worked at the Jeppe Police Station before moving to Parkview in 2008 as a community service centre personnel and relieve commander.

He told the Rosebank Killarney Gazette that some challenges have been met in his new role that would require operators being educated in order to get them up to speed with specific processes and laws that govern their trade.

“In terms of inspection, I’ve noted that most dealers don’t know that after five years of registration of certificate, that they have to come to the police station for a renewal,” said Chukudu, who added that educating liquor and recycled goods operators is a necessary resort.

“In that case, I’m [assessing] launching a forum that will be held about once a month in order to educate operators and also to get their suggestions and/ or hear what their grievances are.”
