Animal rights organisation, Beauty Without Cruelty South Africa (BWCSA), in partnership with Fur Free SA and Speak! are hosting a march in support of the bill to ban cosmetic testing in South Africa. Last year, BWCSA initiated the Animal Protection Act amendment to include a ban on cosmetic testing.
The purpose of the bill was to amend two acts, the Animals Protection Act 1962 and the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act of 1972, with the following intentions:
- To prohibit the sale and manufacture of cosmetics (final product and ingredients) which were tested on animals in South Africa
- To criminalise the testing of cosmetics on animals
- To criminalise the failure to provide animals with an appropriate environment.
The march, in support of the bill, is scheduled at 10am, 21 April, at Zoo Lake directly opposite the Joburg Zoo entrance on Jan Smuts Avenue. The march will proceed to the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) to hand over the petition to be brought in motion in Parliament on behalf of BWCSA.
The march coincides with the City’s #AreSebetseng clean-up campaign and local residents’ associations are expected to be busy in the area and have urged participants to not litter and assist with the clean-up if they can.
