Storm water upgrade to go ahead

The Johannesburg Development Agency has announced that the first phase of the upgrade of the stormwater system in Orange Grove and Norwood will commence in May.

The upgrade to the storm-water system was conceived after the horrific flooding that caused major damage in Ward 74, including the destruction of the Patterson Park boundary wall and flooding a number of homes and gardens.

The Johannesburg Development Agency alongside Ward 74 councillor David Fisher hosted a public meeting to outline the project on 5 December at Highlands Boys’ High School. The first phase of the storm-water upgrade will include the erection and establishment of the construction boundary structure and the demolition of storm-water infrastructure and associated storm-water pipes followed by the reinstatement of the storm-water infrastructure and landscape.

Resident engineer on the project, Kagiso Selaledi said the issues of flooding stem channels on the storm-water drain cannot carry the volume of water coming through. The culverts moving along the Sandspruit River are irregular in size and cause flooding.

Ward 74 councillor David Fisher welcomed the project and said there are additional problems discovered by the JDA including the bridges near Chelton Park which will be included in the upgrade.

He added, “Its an essential project from an emergency aspect, but its also good as a long-term upgrade that will be of assistance to the residents.”

The project will begin in May and is expected to run until February next year.
