Youngsters from St John’s College performed at the Festival of Excellence in Dramatic Arts at the Johannesburg Fringe Theatre on 16 May.
The festival is currently in its 12th year and with the participation of some of the best drama departments from schools across Johannesburg, it has become a staple in the drama calendar.
The schoolchildren performed Woza Superman, a collaborative piece created by children from St John’s College and St Mary’s School Waverly, and was directed by St John’s College youngsters Sithenkosi Mbuli and Thomas Sandilands.
Spokesperson for the school Jacqui Deeks said that their production was inspired by the acclaimed South African play Woza Albert by Mbongeni Ngema and Percy Mtwa.
Deeks added, “This cutting-edge new work explores issues of power, violence and gender inequality, and unpacks what we have been taught about gender roles in contemporary South Africa.”
