Kingsmead College Choir was part of a two-yearly international event held on the African continent for the first time.
“The biennial Interkultur World Choir Games, held every second year, took place in Tshwane and afforded the choir an opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the best choirs in the country as well as worldwide,” Elsabé Fourie, director of arts and music at Kingsmead College said.
The event was aimed at bringing together amateur choirs from all over the world to sing, enjoy making music and build cross-cultural relationships.

The choir participated in the category, Folklore a capella and prepared a programme of five traditional songs, including Emlanjeni (Riverbank), Ingoma (Song), Siyabonga Somandla (Thank you, God), Seteng Sediba (There is a well) and Hlonolofatsa (Bless).
The Kingsmead College Choir also had the privilege of taking a tour to Europe during the April holidays, visiting the beautiful cities of Vienna and Salzburg in Austria and Lido di Jesolo, Venice, Verona, Padua and Treviso in Italy.
“The choir performed in Vienna, Salzburg and Venice, of which the highlight without a doubt, was the performance in the mass in St Mark’s Basilica in Venice,” Fourie said.
She added that the European audiences absolutely loved the performances, especially the traditional African songs, and the choir had standing ovations at every concert.

The 10th World Choir Games, involving 300 choirs and 16 000 participants from 62 countries, was the biggest-ever choir games organised outside Europe.
