UJW honours Madiba with cupcakes

NORWOOD – Patrons at a mall came out in numbers to assist with the icing of cupcakes as part of the Nelson Mandela birthday celebration.

As part of the annual Nelson Mandela birthday celebrations, the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) in Johannesburg prepared iced cupcakes to feed the needy.

The former icon’s birthday is celebrated on 18 July with a clarion call encouraging people ‘to do good’ for the needy in their communities.

On the eve of the celebration, the union invited the community to extend a helping hand at an event held at Norwood Mall. They assisted by icing about 2 000 cupcakes that had been baked by the union’s women-only affiliates.

Helen Levitan, Ros Hurwitz and Beryl Katz are some of the community members who help with icing cupcakes at Norwood Mall.

Organiser, Bev Cohen thanked the community for heeding the call and going through to the mall to help with the cupcakes. She said the cupcakes would be delivered to various charity organisations around Johannesburg. She cited Alexandra Disability Clinic, CHOC House as part of the Reach for a Dream, as well as others including in Soweto.

“This is our fifth Mandela birthday celebrations and we’ve been supporting charities as part of our participation in honouring the legacy of Mandela. We received huge support from our community and the icing event was amazing,” said Cohen.

For the past five years, the union has donated shoes to schoolchildren and bags with goodies for newborn babies at hospitals and children’s organisations.

Shayna Lever, Philippa Bergman and Kiara Bergman are at the Norwood Mall to help ice cupcakes to give to the needy to honour Nelson Mandela on his centenary.

“This is an important day in our calendar and, as the Union of Jewish Women, we want to show love to our communities,” she said.

“This brings our organisation to the fore and shows how much the union cares and loves the communities that it works with.

“We encourage other organisation to play their part and also work with our union to show love to the needy. This is because the more you give, the more you will also receive.”
