#ICYMI: Happy birthday, Matron
LOMBARDY EAST – The Thembalami Care Centre celebrated the 60th birthday of a beloved staff member.
When a popular leader turns 60, it is only proper to throw a party.
The Thembalami Care Centre hosted a special 60th surprise birthday party for one of their matrons, Paulina Hlatshwako recently.
Rand Aid spokesperson Cathy Grosvenor said, “Her colleagues at the Rand Aid-run care centre in Lombardy East had Matron Paulina smiling from ear to ear when she realised how much effort had gone into making her birthday extra special.”
The matron has been with Rand Aid for 34 years and is the deputy manager at Thembalami Care Centre.
Social worker at the care centre, Lara Hurwitz said, “She was speechless when staff members serenaded her with song and dance.”
Staff enjoyed curry and rice, malva pudding and custard as well as a beautiful birthday cake, especially baked for the occasion. The popular matron was also presented with a gift of a nightgown and slippers.
Manager at Thembalami, Elize Raath said, “When one thinks of a matron, the first word that comes to mind is ‘strict’. However, being a matron and doing the work that she does, she needs to be strict. She is professional at all times and dedicated to her work. Matron will fight for her staff to be treated with dignity and respect but at the same time, she will reprimand them when they are in the wrong.
“She knows each resident well, their medical conditions and medication. If you want to find out something about someone, go and ask her because she has a memory like an elephant.”
