UPDATE: ‘He is doing much better’ – principal’s niece

Sandringham High School principal Phillip du Plessis is reportedly recovering steadily at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital in Parktown.

The 55-year-old Du Plessis, who had been missing since 4 July, was found at the hospital on 20 July. He was using the school’s car the day he disappeared, which was traced to the parking lot of Carnival City Casino.

Family representative and Du Plessis’ niece Ana Saunders said the family noticed something was wrong when communication with him stopped.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education Steve Mabona said, “It is alleged that the principal was knocked by a vehicle in Brakpan on 5 July, and rushed to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital.”

Du Plessis, who broke his leg in two places, was in a critical but stable condition in ICU. Saunders said that he is currently making a good recovery. “He is doing so much better. The ventilator was removed because he could breathe on his own.”

She told North Eastern Tribune that he is currently talking, but only in whispers. Though he doesn’t remember the accident he remembers his family members. “We are so happy that he is doing better and better every day. The staff at Sandringham High School have also been incredible with so much support coming from them.”
