Conference to discuss tailored solutions facing Africa
ILLOVO – It is expected that the conference will also present opportunities to explore collaborations and partnerships for increased impact.
The African Philanthropy Forum (APF) is set to hold its annual conference at The Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg on August 1 and 2 to discuss pressing issues affecting Africans.
Established in 2014, APF is a community of philanthropists and social investors who seek to influence and actualise inclusive and sustainable development in Africa by Africans.

This year’s conference aims to create a platform for speakers and delegates to discuss tailored solutions to issues around health, population explosion, education, regional integration in Africa and climate change among other things.
It will also shed some light on the role philanthropists can play in actualising Africa we all dream about.
It is expected that the conference will also present opportunities to explore collaborations and partnerships for increased impact.
According to the conference organisers, a diverse group of visionary leaders from philanthropists, social investors, heads of foundations and corporate organisations to NBA stars and legends will gather to learn and share best practices that have been garnered over decades of industry experience in Africa and across the world.
Among those confirmed to participate include former South African president Thabo Mbeki, Dr Judy Dlamini, executive chairperson of Mbekani Group, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, founder of Princess of Africa Foundation, Donne Nicole, CEO of Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili, senior economic advisor at Africa Economic Development Policy Initiative, renowned activist and founder of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, Phuti Mahanyele, executive chairperson of Sigma Capital, Nyokabi Kenyatta, director at Kenyatta Trust, Graça Machel, founder of Graça Machel Trust, Dikembe Mutombo, former NBA star and founder, Dikembe Mutombo Foundation.

Tsitsi Masiyiwa, board chair of APF, said South Africa has gained significant momentum in the philanthropic space over the years.
“Hosting the conference in Johannesburg provides the opportunity for philanthropists and stakeholders to engage and discuss best practices that are scalable and adaptable to amplify development work in Africa,” said Masiyiwa.
“Beyond this, it is also the centennial of one of the most influential Africans that has ever lived, that is Nelson Mandela, someone we all continue to draw inspiration from.”
Although there has been exponential growth in the continent’s largest economies, more than half of the continent’s economies have either slowed down or come to a halt, she said.
The 2018 APF conference seeks to inform, inspire and ignite the passion to bridge the widening and persistent gap between Africa’s potential and its reality.
