Norwood Young Stars Football Club girls’ team played to a 2-all draw against the Johannesburg United Football Club in their first-ever soccer match.
The girls-only team was established two weeks ago by coach Venitta Masisi after the girls apparently approached her wanting to play soccer.
The match, which was played at the Norwood Park because of lack of playing fields in the area, was part of the Women’s Day celebrations.
Masisi said she was pleased with the girls’ performance considering that it was their first encounter.
She said the girls played the first match and the boys followed later with the same club but boys won the second stanza convincingly with a 4–2 win final score.
“It was very exciting to see the girls playing in that fashion and I was so impressed with the way they actually played,” said Masisi.
“The girls also enjoyed themselves and they are keen to play more matches and they want us to register to play in a league in the future. The only problem is that we still struggling with playing fields to enable them to train and host their opponents.”
Norwood Young Stars FC now consists of both boys’ and girls’ teams but the club has no training field and that, according to Masisi, hampers their chance of growing as a football club.
Masisi said she is currently organising trials to give all children in the suburbs wanting to play soccer a chance to showcase their talent.
“We haven’t yet issued a date for the trials but it will be communicated as soon as we know and decided where they will be held.
“We are still looking for a playing field that will cater for both boys and girls and as soon as we know, we’ll communicate about a date,” she said.
Currently, it’s only an open team for girls because there are not many of them to have other divisions but the coach said they are looking forward to new signings soon and broaden their squad.
Masisi said they will then join the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA) league as soon as the registrations are open later in this year.
Meanwhile, on Women’s Day, Masisi said there were plenty of activities held on the day and added that girls also received sanitary towels sponsored by the councillor, Eleanor Huggett.
