Glenhazel Primary School children will compete at the regional level of the Story Skirmish competition organised by the Sandringham Library in October.
This after they successfully booked their seat in the first round of the competition against Orchards, M.C Weiler and Ikage primary schools, held at River Park Library on 5 September.
Each school’s team is made up of seven children selected from grades 4 and 5 competing in this educational challenge.
Following their successful first round of the competition, Glenhazel Primary School proceeded to the zonal level which was held on 17 September at Sandringham Library.
Glenhazel Primary School’s English teacher, Nobuhle Zondo said they competed against five other local schools at the zonal level and came second after Norwood Primary School who came first. Zondo continued that they are now proceeding to compete at the regional level which will take place on 10 October at Halfway House Library in Midrand.
According to the teacher, the library gives them 15 books to read and each child must read all of them. They are then given questions to answer. “In the first round children have a chance to discuss their answers as a school and respond.
“In the second round, any child from any of the schools who knows the answer gives the answer. If you give a wrong answer, marks are deducted.”
The school was invited by Sandringham Library to participate since they are close and share the same proximity. “They actually came to our school last year and asked if we were interested and we agreed and joined the competition,” Zondo said.
This is the second year the school has competed in the competition and Zondo added that last year they made it as far as the regional level of the competition.
She said individual children participating in this competition benefit extensively and even gain much-desired skills and knowledge. The competition sharpens reading and comprehension skills and helps the children become better with book reviews as they are supposed to give an account of a book they have read. “Also, it also sharpens their language and their listening skills improves,” concluded Zondo.
