Parktown Girls’ get in it to win it!

PARKTOWN – The learners at Parktown High School for Girls have certainly put in their energy and skills this year as they took part in and achieved various competitions for their extra-curricular activities.

 

The learners at Parktown High School for Girls have been putting massive effort into various extra-curricular activities.

These included the English Olympiad, Material Science Poster Competition and public speaking.

Head of department for English at the school, Allister Metcalfe, said the 16 girls who entered the English Olympiad were awarded certificates. “Of the five gold certificates, learner Emily Barnes came 36th out of the top 50 places in the country.

“This earns her a free tuition scholarship for her first year of any course of study at Rhodes University upon successful completion of her matriculation examination.” The other gold certificate achievers were Zayyanna Amod, Kiara Johnson, Tasneem Mahomed and Leia Singh.

Another extra-curricular activity – public speaking – which Parktown High School for Girls’ achievers Fadzai Matanhire and Aamena Patel participated in and got certificates after they had won in the Tip of the Tongue competition.

Grade 10 physical science learners excelled in the annual Material Science Poster Competition hosted by the Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials at Wits.

According to the teacher Karen Field, the learners were tasked with producing a poster promoting strong science-related material on how degrees in science and engineering could be part of taking Africa into the fourth Industrial Revolution.

The girls all received goodie bags and vouchers and the prize-winners were:

  • Vongai Mawoneke: Graphene – special award for organisation of information
  • Nothando Sithole and Payal Pandaram: Inconel’s life at Parktown – special award for new and exciting material
  • Ammaarah Badsha: A Disappearing Act: Metamaterials – 3rd place overall (R5 000 for the school)
  • Siphosihle Mbongo, Rendani Tshitangano and Temoso Molebatsi: We can. We Aluminise – 1st place overall (R15 000 for the school).

In the school’s first year of public speaking, six learners participated in the national finals in two competitions. The Tip of the Tongue Competition was held in Midrand where learner Fadzai Matanhire achieved first place in the Grade 9 Entertainment Speech category and Aamena Patel achieved third place in the Grade 9 Motivational Speech category.

The second competition was the South African Literacy Association Competition held in Mpumalanga. Learners, Tiffany Arendse, Chiddimma Nwokedi, Tasneem Howlader and Yusra Munir all delivered excellent speeches and learnt a lot from listening to the diversity of speeches presented.
