St John’s College Academy is thrilled by results achieved by top learner Mpolo Ngoywa who bagged four distinctions.
Mpolo, who attends Barnato Park High School, attained four distinctions alongside an impressive 72 per cent in advanced programme maths. He enrolled at St John’s College Academy at the beginning of 2016. The academy, which has been running for 11 years, identifies schoolboys with academic potential but from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The academy provides afternoon tuition to learners in maths, English, geography, information technology and the sciences, taught by St John’s College teachers.
Mpolo said, “It’s been an incredibly tough year. I worked hard for these results, and I’m really happy with my achievement.
“I’m so grateful to my mom, my brothers and all my teachers for their support. This has been something of a team effort.
“Things are really tough at home, and it would have been really difficult to have received these marks without the help of St John’s.”
He has been offered a bursary to do A-levels at St John’s College this year. He said, “I’m really excited. Doing A levels is going to give me the academic credentials I need to be accepted at any tertiary institution in the world. I’m excited.”
Director of the academy Agnes Nugent said, “Seventeen out of the 19 matriculants this year achieved university entrance passes. Many of the academy boys have achieved distinctions. It’s an honour to have been part of their success.”
