Jewish community honours journalist ‘friend’ Moses Moyo
JOBURG -– The South African Friends of Israel (Safi) will launch an award in the name of the late journalist and publisher, Moses Moyo, who was considered a 'friend' of the Jewish state.
The late Moses Moyo, a Zimbabwean journalist who worked in the inner-city of Johannesburg and described as a friend of the Jewish community, will be immortalised with a community award named after him.
This was announced by the outgoing chairperson of the South African Zionist Federation, Ben Swartz at the federation’s 49th annual national conference held at The Galleria in Eastgate, Sandton.
Moyo, the founder and publisher of the community newspaper, The Inner-City Gazette in the Johannesburg CBD, died after a short illness at his Johannesburg home on 25 October last year and was buried at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg.
His vibrant publication tackled the housing problems in the inner-city and other related social ills such as crime and overcrowding in dilapidated and hijacked buildings that hardly have any form of sanitation and running water.
Speaking at the conference, Swartz acknowledged the presence of Moyo’s family and said they had taken a decision to introduce the Moses Moyo Award. He added that they were still to deliberate on the specs of the award which will be bestowed under the jurisdiction of the South African Friends of Israel for the first time in a year’s time.
