Bleak outlook for youth employment as young people remain vulnerable to labour markets

South Africa’s unemployment rate has risen to 29 per cent in 2019’s second quarter, the worst rate since 2008. This is a 1.4 per cent increase from the first quarter’s unemployment rate of 27.6 per cent.

The unemployment figures follow a published report released on 30 July by Statistics South Africa. According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, there are 6.7 million unemployed people in South Africa between the ages of 15 and 64 years.

The unemployment rate for the youth stood at 56.4 per cent, and according to statistician-general, Risenga Maluleke, young people remain vulnerable to labour markets despite their education level. Out of a total of 10.3 million youth between 15 – 24 years, the number who are not in employment, not in education and not in training has decreased slightly to 3.3 million.
