Yeoville police reach out to vulnerable people in their precinct

Usually, their job is to fight crime and keep our communities safe but to Yeoville Police Station‘s Social Crime Prevention coordinators it does not end there.

In the spirit of Nelson Mandela, while simultaneously embracing the qualities of this hero, Sergeant Thabo Malatjie and Constable Lindiwe ‘Pile’ Nwoko donated food parcels, clothes and non-perishable food to an old age home and a shelter around Yeoville.

According to the police spokesperson Captain Sifiso Mabizela, the donated food parcels and other items were a collective contribution by the Yeoville Police Station employees.

He said they contributed either from their groceries or cough out money from their own pockets and buy groceries, all for the good deed to the community.

“Although the National Mandela Day was on Thursday 18 July, the pair do this as part of their normal duties although it could be difficult at times without necessary support,” he said.

He indicated that part of Constable Nwoko and Sergeant Malatjie’s duties include placing victims of crimes in shelters and rehabilitation of displaced or homeless people in conjunction with the departments of health and social development.

This also helps prevent bullying and gangsterism, alcohol and substance abuse in schools as well as eradicate social ills that could lead to juvenile delinquencies and adoption of crime as a norm.

Mabizela said it is believed at their station that the little you give to someone in need can inspire others to change for the better. “Let us continue with the spirit of Nelson Mandela.”
