Scores of residents benefit from shoe drive

HOUGHTON ESTATE – Scores of beneficiaries in Alexandra received their shoes following a shoe drive campaign.

Residents in Alexandra township are benefiting from an ongoing shoe drive campaign initiated by Jennifer Lobel in partnership with Linda Twala, Virgin Active Old Eds manager David Liebenberg, SA Wheeliebins and Minuteman Press Parkhurst.

Lobel thanked everyone who dropped shoes in different areas including Old Eds Virgin Active in Houghton and at Eastgate Virgin Active. “The response to this initiative has been fantastic,” she said.

Lobel added that Morningside and Bryanston Virgin Actives have also been added to the drop-off points and she hopes members of the public will continue dropping off their shoes. The bins are prominently displayed in the foyer of the gyms where the public can ask for further information if needed.

“We received an incredible response from this initiative,” she said.

Some of the donated shoes have already been given to the beneficiaries in Alexandra and Lobel pleaded that members of the community should also consider donating school shoes to help destitute learners from different schools.

Lobel has been working on various projects with Twala who is known as the father of the community and the leader who devoted himself to the betterment of the society in which he lives. “My work and association with Twala in Alexandra over many years inspired me to get up and do something.”
