Johannesburg cop praised after successful conviction of robber

JOHANNESBURG – The 35-year-old was arrested in Johannesburg and tried for common robbery.

An investigating officer with the Johannesburg Central Police Station has been praised for his crime-fighting efforts.

A spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele explained that Constable Kgabo Dihangwane ensured that justice was served against a common robber, Sipho Makamu, who was arrested last year.

According to Mbele, 35-year-old Makamu and his accomplices robbed a 38-year-old male at the corner of Jeppe and Harrison streets on 4 September last year. “The victim was walking along the street when he was choked by the suspects and, together with his accomplices, took his cell phone and a bag with a laptop inside.

“[The victim] screamed for help and the community came to his rescue and they apprehended Makamu and recovered all the belongings of the victim from him. He was found guilty for common robbery and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment at the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 11 July.”

Mbele said that this conviction is the result of the diligent work done by Dihangwane of the Johannesburg Central Detectives. He added that they hope this sentence will scare away future offenders from committing the same crime.
