Rape suspect in police custody
JOHANNESBURG – The suspect allegedly raped his victim while she was asleep.
The Johannesburg police have arrested a 25-year-old male for allegedly raping his roommate’s 24-year-old friend on 13 July.
According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station, Captain Xoli Mbele, the alleged rape incident took place in the inner city.
“It is alleged that the suspect raped the victim who was at the time asleep,” said Mbele.
“The victim was at a shisanyama [buy and braai] with her friend enjoying themselves before she went to sleep in her friend’s place. While asleep, she felt that someone was on top of her raping her and she [apparently] jumped out and realised it is the guy that resides with her friend.”
An investigation is continuing and the suspect is expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
“Real men protect and respect women…never take advantage of the situation where a woman is asleep,” advised Mbele.
