Jewish radio station ChaiFM launches helpline for the distressed
HOUGHTON ESTATE -– Jewish radio station ChaiFM launches a helpline for those in dire need of counselling in times of distress.
Help is only a phone call away in times of distress for communities within the distribution area of the this newspaper.
This follows the launch of the ChaiFM Helpline 0800 24 24 36 on 18 August at Acacia Grove in Houghton Estate Office Park.
ChaiFM is the Jewish community radio station with a 60 per cent non-Jewish listenership and speakers at the launch emphasised that the helpline was not just for Jewish people only but ‘would serve all people regardless of race and religion’.
Speaking at the launch event, Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein said the helpline would give the community a sense of strength, unity and inspiration in times of dire need for counselling services.
“Although I am here to give my blessings to this noble cause for our communities, I greatly feel that it [helpline] does not need my blessings at all as it already has God’s blessings by virtue of the kind and compassionate services that it will be offering to our communities,” he said.
The founder of the helpline, businessman Issie Kirsh, who is also the founder of Radio 702 and KFM in Cape Town and later sold them to Prime Media that was co-founded by his son, William, said he was approached by Sosa (Save Our Senior Aged) to establish the helpline.
“I decided to rope in ChaiFM as a partner since the helpline can never work without the attachment of a radio station. The helpline will assist all people, child or elderly, irrespective of race and religion,” Kirsh said.
Ann Matthews, manager of the helpline, said she was looking forward to working with the various volunteers of all ages that have spent considerable time being trained by the Family Life Centre.
For her part, CEO of ChaiFM Kathy Kaler, said she was raring to go and couldn’t wait for their first caller so they could put the amount of work done in preparation for the opening into practical use.
