Primestars gives learners a theatrical revision programme
ROSEBANK – Grade 12 learners were given the opportunity to put their cinema experience to good use through Primestars' eduCate programme with Ster-Kinekor.
Learners, government officials and sponsor representatives all came together to experience the power of cinema as theatres of learning. Primestars, together with their committed sponsors. hosted a successful cinema experience at The Zone @ Rosebank to celebrate nine years of touching lives through the eduCate programme.
Primestars is an education organisation strategically positioned as a private tutor to public education. The organisation specialises in facilitating national youth empowerment programmes for high school learners from under-served communities, making use of Ster-Kinekor Cinemas as theatres of learning. Their programmes focus on career guidance, financial literacy, maths, science and entrepreneurship with their success spanning over a decade owed to public and private sector partnerships.
Once again, Primestars stepped in to help thousands of Grade 12s excel in their maths and science examinations through their revision programme.

This unique concept involves transporting learners during weekends to 11 digitised cinema theatres across nine provinces while giving them an opportunity to learn mathematics and science in a stimulating environment.
EduCate is made up of 10 pre-recorded, two-hour revision sessions – five in maths and five in science. These sessions cover the entire matric curriculum and are aimed at preparing disadvantaged South African youth for their matric maths and science examinations.
Sasria Soc Ltd’s managing director, Cedric Masondo said, “There is no greater time than the present to enhance knowledge and expertise in maths and science. It is important that we equip our learners with skills that will help them with relevant and future-oriented career choices. As Sasria, we are proud to be part of an initiative of this nature that can change the trajectory of the skills pool in the country.”
During the session, learners were provided with refreshments of coke and popcorn. They also received subject toolkits to ensure that they can study further at their homes and they get the opportunity to interact with top subject experts after screenings.
“Past interaction with learners at cinemas has indicated that they find this learning environment very stimulating and, as a result, concentration and message retention are improved. Participating schools have reported a marked improvement in the maths and science results of the learners that have attended the programme,” said Martin Sweet, managing director at Primestars.
He added that Primestars strongly believes that investing in young people with maths and science is key to transforming South Africa’s economy. It is Primestars’ desire that the eduCate programme will continue to assist more learners for years to come. This would not be possible without the contributions of sponsors such as Sanlam, Sasria, Bidvest Group, Western Cape education department, Kulula.com, Omnia, Tsogo Sun, Gearhouse Group and TATA.
