Suspect arrested with illegal firearms in Johannesburg
JOHANNESBURG – According to the police spokesperson, a preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was on his way to Bloemfontein to sell the firearms.
Police arrested a 49-year-old male for possession of two unlicensed firearms at Johannesburg Railway Park Station on 12 August.
According to the spokesperson for the Johannesburg Central Police Station Captain Xoli Mbele, police were conducting a stop-and-search when they saw a suspicious male changing platforms.
He added that police officers observed the man and, when he saw police in uniform, he changed direction. “They stopped him and upon searching him, they recovered two unlicensed firearms inside his bag. When they compared the firearms with their serial numbers, it showed that it belongs to Kungwini Local Municipality.”
Mbhele said that a preliminary investigation revealed that the man was on his way to Bloemfontein to sell the firearms.
The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of serious and violent crimes.
An investigation is currently underway and the suspect is expected to appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
