Minibus taxi driver caught more than five times over the drinking limit in Houghton

HOUGHTON – The Metro Police freeway officers were on patrol when they noticed 11 passengers on a minibus taxi screaming for help.

What appeared to be a normal day for Metro police patrolling the highway on the M1 north near the Glenhove Road off-ramp in Houghton, took a dramatic turn when the officers noticed 11 passengers in a minibus taxi screaming for help on 18 November.

Head of the Metro police David Tembe said the freeway officers stopped the minibus taxi and asked the driver to take a breathalyser test. “When tested, the breathalyser reading was 1.74mg/l.”

The legal limit in South Africa is a blood alcohol limit of o.05mg per 100 ml or a breath-alcohol content of 0.24mg per 1 000ml.

Thembe added that the officers immediately arrested the driver for driving under the influence and passengers were assisted to find alternative transport.
