Waverly Girls High School disappointed their teachers after they had dropped again in their matric final results that were released on 8 January.
The girls-only school failed to improve on their final marks for the second time in two years after achieving an 80 per cent pass rate in their 2019 matric results.
In 2017, the school obtained 91 per cent and last year in 2018, the results declined to 86 per cent dropping about 5 per cent.
This, according to deputy principal Angela Wanckel, is disappointing even after they had tried hard to assist the learners to improve their results.
Wanckel said based on their analysis, the same girls that failed in their September preliminary examinations are the ones who also failed in the final exams.
The deputy principal blames the failure on a lack of commitment from the learners, citing ill-discipline, late coming and bunking of classes as among the challenges that still persist at the school.
“We have tried to assist our learners and we even had successful consultative meetings with parents which were well attended,” Wanckel said.
“We have two groups of learners in our school: the ones who were doing things accordingly and attending to their academic duties. We also had a rebel group that really failed to take things seriously.”
She, however, said there is good news though, referring to one of the top learners Xuma Blessing Mabuza who achieved six distinctions in English (80 per cent), Afrikaans (86 per cent), history (95 per cent), life orientation (86 per cent), business studies (84 per cent) and maths (82 per cent).
Wanckel said they also had 65 bachelor passes which is 45 per cent, 59 diploma passes which translates to 40 per cent while those who attained higher certificates amount to 22 (about 16 per cent).
“Our top achievers really did well and the quality of passes also increased.
“Of the 184 learners registered for matric in 2019, 182 of them wrote their exams while the other two did not and in total, we have 36 learners who failed.”
She said they are, however, not deterred by this, instead, they are forging ahead with the new academic year and hope to make improvements this time around.
