Highlands North Boys’ matric results decline by 7 per cent

HIGHLANDS NORTH – The school plans to introduce new programmes to prepare their learners in advance.

Even though Highlands North Boys’ High School’s Class of 2019 matric results dropped by more than seven per cent, the headmaster said he still believes this was a successful academic year.

Principal Mike Masinge said they might have decreased on their matric results but he is happy with the final outcome based on the progress made since he arrived last year.

Masinge was reacting to the 90 per cent pass rate the school obtained in their matric final marks released on 8 January.

The boys-only school failed to improve on their marks compared to the previous year when they obtained a 97 per cent pass rate.

Masinge said even though they have slightly ‘slided’ down, he still thinks they have improved, according to his records.

“When I got here last year in August in the third term of the academic year, the school was on 77 per cent,” Masinge said.

“We then managed to improve to 98 per cent in our preliminary exams and then our final marks in which we obtained 90 per cent. With this percentage, the school is still in the bracket of high achievers in the district – it’s a good story to tell.”

The school has obtained 20 bachelor passes, 21 diploma passes and nine higher certificate passes.

This, said Masinge, was made possible by their participation in the secondary school intervention programme (SSIP) which the school participated in for the first time since it was introduced over the years.

Masinge said they also took learners to a camp to help with the preparations ahead of the exams claiming this also was a successful programme. “We also met with our Grade 12 parents to discuss with them about allowing their children space to study and prepare for the exams.

“And I can safely say they also played an important role in the school’s achievement.”

To prepare for this academic year and moving forward, he said they have maths, science and technology programme for grades 8 and 9.As for Grade 10s and 11s, he said they will have extra classes while their senior learners, the Grade 12s, will have Saturday lessons which Masinge said will be compulsory.
