Triumph as injured Hadeda is recovered
GREENSIDE – Triumph came when the feathered friend was finally recovered alive.
A search in Greenside for an injured hadeda had a happy ending.
This was after the Owl Rescue Centre shared on social media that the bird had been spotted in the suburb with an arrow protruding from its body.
“We received a call from a concerned resident of Greenside who spotted the Hhdeda in her garden with an arrow lodged in his back. We immediately reacted and published a public notice to help with the search,” said the director at Owl Rescue Centre, Danelle Murray.
“The hadeda frequented several gardens in the Greenside area, and despite his injury and the arrow, was still capable of flight which made it particularly difficult to catch him. We worked closely with South African Wildlife Rehabilitation on this to ensure that the hadeda received assistance as soon as possible.”
“Brendan Murray from Owl Rescue Centre caught and rescued the hadeda yesterday [2 February] after several failed attempts. He refused to give up hope. The hadeda is currently receiving care at the Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal clinic. He is in very capable hands and we trust that he will make a good recovery. We named him Cupid.”
Danelle added that although their main focus was to rescue, rehabilitate and release owl species, they often helped out with wildlife whenever they were needed. She believed that there was still a long way to go to educate the public on wildlife conservation.
She shared that hadedas eat insects by poking their long beaks into the ground and this aerates the soil and stimulates plant growth.
Danelle concluded, “Every living organism has a place in this world and we should respect them for the role that they play in the environment.
“We can only hope that people will be more tolerable of wildlife and that the person who did this feels remorse for their cruel actions.”
