Beware of false prophets
NORWOOD – Residents are asked to be vigilant before accepting spiritual advice from strangers on the street.
Norwood Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Eric Masotsha has warned residents to be vigilant following a string of cases in the area related to robberies by false prophets operating under false pretences.
Masotsha said suspects were posing as prophets and targeting vulnerable students.
“Their modus operandi is to stop their victims and to start prophesying to them. In one of the cases, the the victim was told to bring her laptop, and her roommate, her cellphone,” he explained.
“She was transported to a local supermarket where she was told to buy salt and water. Upon returning from the store, the fake prophet was nowhere to be found and the valuables had been stolen.”
Masotsha has given the following advice:
1. Do not stop for any stranger in the streets.
2. Do not take or listen to any spiritual advice from strangers.
3. Genuine prophets will never request your personal belongings or money.
The public is urged to report these crimes to their nearest police station. Tip-offs can also be left on the mySAPS app which can be accessed on any smartphone.
