NPO helps children with maths and English
HIGHLANDS NORTH – Community based volunteer organisations such as The Link, will now, more than ever, play a vital role in bridging the gap left by the pandemic.
The Link is a not for profit, volunteer-based organisation that works with children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The organisation is trying to increase its volunteer numbers so that they can help more children.
The Link has 19 centres based at low-income schools throughout the greater Johannesburg area including HA Jack Primary School in Highlands North, Norwood Primary School, Yeoville Community School and Parktown Public School.
Coordinator for The Link Literacy Project, Maggie Fussell said, “Children need to be able to read and to be given a foundation in English and maths in order to have a chance of making their way through the education system. Many of our children live in environments where the odds are heavily stacked against them, and where there is very little opportunity for them to have any help in developing and improving these core skills.”
The Link relies on members of the community who work one-on-one with Grade 2 children helping to build foundation skills in either the literacy or numeracy programmes.
Volunteers are a diverse group of people from all walks of life. They include parents of children from surrounding schools, grandparents, students and working people. Basic training is provided, the centres are all well equipped with resources and all Covid-19 protocols are adhered to. “We’ve made sure that our programme offers a structured, safe environment for both the learners and the volunteers. The more volunteers we have, the more children we can help,” said Fussell.
