International pride month is commemorated in June where the LGBTQ+ community hosts various events.

Pride celebrates and acknowledges the LGBTQI+ community by encouraging people to be themselves.

June marks international Pride Month where the LGBTQ+ community celebrates in a number of ways across the globe and various events are held as a way of recognising this community.

VIGIL MABE: Pride Month is definitely necessary, it is for the LGBTQI community to celebrate themselves and to be recognised. This is the time where we get to hear all the great things that the community has done and what they have overcome, all while highlighting the lows of being in that community and finding better ways to move forward.
CHLOE BUCHEL: I think pride is so much more about how far we have come from such a closed off and traditional and unaccepting community. It’s really cool to see people being themselves without being judged during pride events.

The Rosebank Killarney Gazette team asked residents why pride month was important…

KHULULILE MKHIZE: This year I was presented with the opportunity to educate myself about the history of the Pride community. Therefore, I think it is necessary for the LGBTQ+ community to continue to celebrate Pride month as they aim to end the stigma and discrimination that they face in South Africa/worldwide.
